Summer Skin Safety – GOTTA HAVE IT!

As the temperatures climb into the 90’s this week here in New Jersey, thoughts are of cooling down by going “down the shore” ( what we Jerseyans like to call a visit to the beach), or finding the closest pool. We are all about fun in the sun, BUT… we want to be sure you are taking precautions to stay safe. So our topics during the NJ tropics weather will include ways to stay cool, summer safety and outdoor fun.

Today let’s talk sunscreen! There are many views about sunscreen, from not using enough to overusing it, and also making sure you use a sunscreen as natural as possible without slathering a ton of toxins all over your skin (and transferring them into the environment as well). One of the easiest ways to “go natural” with a sunscreen is to find your favorite, non-toxic, non-chemical lotion and add in non-nano zinc oxide powder to provide excellent SPF protection. Natural eSCENTials makes one that is easy to use and reasonably priced. Here’s the link: http://amzn.to/2sH0zCc.

You might also want to go with Badger Lavender Sunscreen (SPF 30) http://amzn.to/2u0akzb

Later in the week we will be talking about the many uses of essential oils for summer fun, but let me highlight that you should NOT USE any citrus oils on your exposed skin when you go out, as they can cause phototoxic or photosensitive reactions.

Some of these oils include bergamot, grapefruit, lemon, lime, cumin, kumquat, tangerine and wild orange (or any blend using one or more of these oils). We will go into more details on that later so do stay tuned!!!

I also found a terrific recipe to make your own sunscreen over at Wellness Mama. You can find it at https://wellnessmama.com/2558/homemade-sunscreen/.

Tomorrow we will be discussing beachwear so be sure to tune in and tell your friends. Please leave a comment to share with our readers on what you have found to be the best sunscreen for yourself and your family!  Naturally, be sure to check with your health professional before using any products!

Here’s to a healthy, safe and sunny day!
