Give Yourself The Brushoff!

Time for a little “forget-me-not” treat to remind yourself to take care of you!  Now you would think that Valentine’s Day would be the WORST time for a brush-off, right?  NO!!!  Time to retrain your brain and embrace it and a fantastic thing!  Why?????  Keep reading!!!

While it’s been around for years, the body treatment of dry brushing has just recently become popular again.  It’s an ayurvedic ritual that involves brushing your full body with a special bristled tool.  While it’s not proven to be a cure-all as some claims say, it does have many, such as being a great skin exfoliator for dry skin cells.  It helps stimulate circulation, which encourages lymphatic drainage.

I added this practice to my self-care routine several years ago and I love it.  I do it in the morning before my shower (since it’s stimulating, I don’t encourage it to be added to your before-bed routine), to remove dead skin cells and energize my whole body!  You need a good bristle brush with not-too-stiff bristles.

This is the (very reasonable) kit I use and recommend:  https://amzn.to/389dnpp

Remove all clothing and then begin lightly brushing upward from the feet to the legs and lower body towards the heart.  Then torso and arms (including under the arms where there are lymph nodes).  Be extra careful on delicate areas of your body (aka “bathing suit areas”).  Finish up around chest and neck, moving the rhythmic brush movements still towards the heart.  Then jump in the shower to finish up – but I don’t recommend any kind of loofah or body salt/sugar scrub after a body brushing.  It could be irritating, especially to sensitive skin.  Less is more, and do remember to brush LIGHTLY!

BONUS TIP:  Before you towel dry after showering, while your skin is still warm and damp, apply a teensy bit of an organic oil (like coconut, avocado or sweet almond oil) or your favorite body lotion.  You will use less, and it will seal in the moisture, which helps keep the skin hydrated and super soft.  Then towel dry as usual. I often add a drop or two of essential oils to the carrier oil as well. My morning favorite is a blend of one drop peppermint, one drop lemon and one drop wild orange (add one drop each to your carrier oil before applying).

Body brushing doesn’t take but a few minutes, and I’ve even done a “quickie brushing” before going out at night as a fast and easy pick-me-up.  I hope you will give it a try. *

Blessings,

Linda
